Subject: The most charming neighbood in Paris. Picasso and Matisse spent a lot of time here. It is still home to many great artists in Paris.

“Get yourself a room in Montmartre,” Pablo Picasso told the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani around 1906. “Go up to Montmartre, you’ll see everything there: painting and all the rest of it, women, too, if that’s what you like.” The great Spanish artist wasn’t far off the mark. You could just about see everything in this scruffy, rustic quarter of Paris, a village unto itself. The lure of its cheap rents drew budding artists in search of studio space, living quarters and ambience. - The National
